Dynamic Visualization of Social Networks Communication Networks Analysis Network Evolution

SEARCH PROCEDURES FOR SOCIAL NETWORKS

 

ONLINE SUPPLEMENT 
of the paper by Trier, M., Bobrik, A. (2008): Searching and Exploring Social Architectures in Digital Networks.  Accepted for Publication in IEEE Internet Computing in 2008.

 

1) Demonstrating a search procedure for social corpora. This video demonstrates a user-driven process of search and exploration. The explored dataset is containing e-mail communication of Enron from 1999 to 2002. The initial social network is too complex to grasp. Therefore, the user searches in the initial social network for the term “transwestern”. Then, the  observed time period is reduced to further limit the search. Picking the three most central actors and analyzing their egonetwork finally gives insights about the area of the  overall network, which is relevant to the search request. For this selected social subset, the most frequent keywords of the filtered set are analyzed to better  understand the context.

2) Search result - term 'transwestern'. This figure shows the occurrences of message exchange about the topic 'transwestern' pipeline company. Interestingly, only one sector of the network is using the term.

3) 3D Dynamic content analysis of NNTP Newsgroup alt.energy.renewable. Using the time filter in combination with the keyword filter allows analyzing the evolution of the four keywords “solar”, “water”, “energy” and “power” in the newsgroup alt.energy.renewable. Initially five disconnected small subgroups appear. They quickly intersect and integrate into one continuously growing network. During that process a large number of small subgroups appear and join the large component. In the end, the sub-network consists of 251 authors, 1172 messages and 578 relations.
